(CEREMONIES). Sepher Minhagim. Prepared by Shimon HaLevi Günzburg. Hebrew text with Yiddish printed in waber-taytsch type. Twenty-two woodcut vignettes illustrating scenes from Jewish ritual life and practice (some repeats); many signed “H.” Formerly in the Alfred Rubens collection. ff. 64. Scattered staining, some leaves frayed with slight loss of text. Recent half-calf. 8vo. Vinograd, Frankfurt a/Main 483. Frankfurt a/Main, Samson Hanua of Homburg, (1723). The woodcuts used here depict many of the same Jewish rituals featured in the Amsterdam editions (albeit in modified form), as well as a few scenes not found therein, including illustrations of the Kaparoth ceremony performed on the eve of Yom Kippur, and the reading of the Esther scroll on Purim. Additionally, the figures’ costumes have in some cases been updated to reflect current modes, such as the viereckiger Schleier (square veil) and ruffles often worn by contemporary German-Jewish women.
