Front cover states: “Kindly return book on leaving the Synagogue.” The Ohel Rachel Synagogue (Chinese: 拉結會堂) is located at 500 North Shaanxi Road, in the Jing'an District of Shanghai, China. Built by Sir Jacob Elias Sassoon in memory of his wife Rachel, it was completed in 1920 and is the largest synagogue in the Far East. Repurposed first under the Japanese occupation during World War II and again following the Communist conquest of Shanghai in 1949, the synagogue site today sits on the grounds of the Shanghai Ministry of Education. It has reopened on very select occasions, at the whim of the Chinese government.
