In a celebrated introduction here, R. Chaim of Volozhin describes the methodological approach of the Vilna Gaon in elucidating the Shulchan Aruch. This is followed by a lengthy foreword written the sons of the Gaon in which they recount the greatness of their father, his particular practices, and overall approach to Torah study.  The Biur HaGr’a is a fundamental source of contemporary Halachic decision-making.
