A member of an ancient family who originated in Troyes, France, and subsequently spread throughout Italy and Germany, the author (c. 1470–1552) migrated to Turkey, where he served as rabbi in Adrianople. He corresponded with the leading Sephardic rabbis, such as R. Eliyahu Mizrachi and R. Yoseph Karo.
