Portuguese writer Adolfo Benarus (1863–1958) was descended from a Moroccan family who were the first Jews to settle (1815) in the Azores Islands. Benarus was born there, at Angra do Heroísmo and later moved to the Portuguese mainland where he taught English in the University of Lisbon. He was also active as a fine artist and in later life appointed honorary president of the Jewish community of Lisbon.
