(HERZL, THEODOR) MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE OF HERZL’S YOUNGEST DAUGHTER, MARGUERITE HERZL. Typed document recording the wedding of Marguerite Herzl and Richard Neumann on 2nd May, 1917. Notary signature and stamp. Two pages. Folds. Folio. Vienna, 1917. ORIGINAL MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE OF MARGUERITE HERZL, THEODORE HERZL’S YOUNGEST DAUGHTER. Marguerite Herzl and Richard Neumann were married by Rabbi David Feuchtwang on the 23rd April, 1917. This Viennese civil marriage certificate is stamped and dated 2nd May, 1917. Marguerite’s husband, a textile manufacturer was 17 years her senior. Together they had one child, Stephen Theodor. Marguerite Herzl (“Trude, ” 1893-1943) was the youngest of Herzl’s three children. Like her two siblings, Trude was burdened by severe bouts of depressive illness that required repeated hospitalization throughout her life. Trude and Richard were deported by the Nazis from Vienna to the Theresienstadt concentration camp where they were later killed. Earlier, in 1935 Trude and Richard’s son Stephan - Theodor Herzl’s only grandchild - was sent for his safety to England where he later joined the British Army. Upon learning after the war that his entire family had been killed, Stephan fell into a deep depression and committed suicide. Stephan never married and thus Theodor Herzl’s familial lineage came to an end. Provenance: Yitzchak Eisig Torczyner (1861-1933) and then by descent within the family. An early Zionist activist, Yitzchak Eisig Torczyner was a friend and confidant of Theodor Herzl. Herzl and other members of the Hebrew national renaissance and early Zionist movement were frequent visitors at the Viennese home of Torczyner. Eisig Torczyner’s son, Menachem Nuchem Torczyner (1885-1948), was active in the Zionist movement in Belgium. Menachem Nuchem’s son Jacques Torczyner (1914-2013), was similarly active as a Zionist, in the United States. This document was safeguarded for well more than a century within the Torczyner family as a treasured keepsake relating to the founder of political Zionism and his family. It is unclear how Yitzchak Eisig Torczyner came to be in possession of the document. A related document with the same provenance, the Birth Certificate of Marguerite Herzl, was sold in Kestenbaum Sale 100, lot 11.
