[Antwerp, c. 1601-1612]. ”The Wanderings of Abraham' is among the most elaborate of Ortelius's compositions. It demonstrates his combined skills as a cartographer and an artist, and his accomplishment as an historian” (Nebenzahl). Unlike most maps in his atlas, this work was composed by Ortelius himself and is so indicated on the map. The map is surrounded by 22 fine medallions containing key episodes from the life of Abraham. The map attempts to be geographically faithful to the time of Abraham. For example, ancient tribal names and territorial divisions are used, and the cities of Sodom and Gomorra are shown.
