Signed by the artist as well as titled in Hebrew and English below. 8 x 10 (20 x 23 cm). Small tear at caption. Framed. Fine representation of the first building of Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, the second synagogue founded in New York and the third oldest Ashkenazi synagogue in the United States. B’nai Jeshurun was formed in 1825, its members, of Dutch, German, and Polish extraction who splintered from prior association with the Spanish-Portuguese Congregation Shearith Israel hence establishing New York’s first Aschkenazi congregation. This rare watercolor by A.J. Davis (1803-92), both an architect and the foremost draftsman and watercolorist of his day, was part of his series on public buildings that were also reproduced in popular engraved views (an example of which accompanies this lot).
