The author was a 16th-century member of an ancient Italian family of French origin. He was a disciple of R. Yoseph Karo and in accordance with his teacher’s deathbed instructions, Gallico issued a ban against Azariah de Rossi’s controversial Me’or Einayim (see Lot 54).
