ISSERLEIN, YISRAEL. Pesakim U’Kethavim [responsa]. FIRST EDITION. ff. (53). Ex-library. Lightly stained otherwise a fine copy. Recent boards. Sm. folio. Vinograd, Venice 12; Stefansky, Sifrei Yesod 275. Venice, Daniel Bomberg, 1519. Important work of responsa by Austrian born R. Israel Isserlein (1390-1460) one of the great Ashkenazic Rishonim, who had a close relationship with the Maharil, Mahariv, and Maharam of Mintz, all of whom held him in the highest esteem. Pesakim U’Kethavim, contains 267 decisions focussed primarily on marriage law. It is maintained that most of the queries in this work were posed by the author himself (see Sha’ch to Yoreh De’ah 196:20). R. Isserlein’s responsa record much historical information regarding 15th-century German-Jewish life and customs, and were highly influential in the later standardization of Ashkenazic Halachic law by R. Moshe Isserles (the Rem’a).
