In Spring 1940, the approximately 50,000 Jews in Bulgaria faced increasing uncertainty as the country moved towards an alliance with Nazi Germany. While not yet subject to the extreme deportations seen later, the community was beginning to feel the effects of rising antisemitic sentiment and looming restrictive legislation, culminating in the passing of the ”Law for Protection of the Nation” in December, which brought Jewish economic, social and political exclusion.
