(BREUER, SALOMON). Yisrael Ephraim Fishel Sofer. Afsei Aretz al HaTorah [commentary on Bereishith and Shemoth]. First Edition. Limited edition (see introduction). Two titles. First title with gold lettering. The Rabbi Dr. Salomon Breuer copy with the Author’s gilt-stamped inscription on upper cover: “Minchah Sheluchah LehaRav HaGaon HaTzadik…Shlomo Breuer.” And with his stamp “Dr. S. B.” on the title-page. ff. (10), 87, 97. Contemporary calf, rubbed. Large 4to. Munkacz, Kohn and Klein, 1899. R. Salomon (Shlomo Zalman) Breuer (1850-1926) married Sophie, the youngest daughter of Rabbiner Samson Raphael Hirsch (1808-88). After receiving Semichah from the Kesav Sofer in Pressburg, R. Breuer was appointed Rabbi of Papa, Hungary. In 1890 he succeeded his recently deceased father-in-law as the rabbi of Frankfurt’s Austrittsgemeinde (secessioned community), thus becoming in essence, the titular head of German Orthodoxy. Among his sons, Rabbi Yosef (1882-1980), would lead the Frankfurt community after him, later, facilitating its transition to Washington Heights, New York. Another son, Isaac (1883-1946), was a fiery ideologue, who, upon moving to Jerusalem, served as the first president of the Poalei Agudath Yisroel. The author of this work (1822-99), was Rabbi of Nanash, Hungary, and a prime disciple of the Chasam Sofer, the Yismach Moshe and R. Chaim Sanzer. - Rabbi Salomon Breuer studied in Pressburg under the Kesav Sofer and was thus well acquainted with many of the disciples of the Chasam Sofer.
