The Jewish Municipal Relief Act.  This act of Parliament allowed Jews to assume all municipal offices without having to take the required oath ”on the true faith of a Christian.” The act made ”de jure” what had already become ”de facto” outside London, for Jews had been elected to municipal office in Southampton in 1838, Birmingham in 1839, and Portsmouth in 1841.
