Merzbacher was Rabinovicz’s patron and built this impressive library (156 manuscripts and 4,332 books including 43 incunabula) essentially for the use of Rabinovicz to aid in research toward preparation of his magnum opus: ‘Dikdukei Sophrim.’  Following Merzbacher’s death the collection was sold, with many of its valuable Hebrew manuscripts and rare books acquired by the Frankfurt City Library - and later transferred to the National Library of Israel in Jerusalem.
