Bidspirit auction | A COMPLETE CALLIGRAPHIC POTTERY TILE
A COMPLETE CALLIGRAPHIC POTTERY TILE PANEL, NORTH AFRICAN MOROCCAN, 19TH CENTURY OR EARLIER - Composed of sixteen square tiles forming a continuous frieze, the panel is decorated in bold relief with flowing Arabic calligraphy in thuluth script, set against a green-glazed ground. The inscription, executed in raised slip and covered in a pale cream glaze, is interlaced with vegetal flourishes, creating a rhythmic interplay of text and ornament. The reverse of the tiles is plain, with traces of kiln firing. The verse written is from the Qur’an, Surah Āl ʿImrān (3:191): رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَذَا بَاطِلًا سُبْحَانَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ (Rabbana ma khalaqta hadha batilan subhanaka faqina ’adhab an-nar) Translation (approximate): “Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; glory be to You, so protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” 80 x 20cm
