AN OTTOMAN METAL THREAD EMBROIDERY TEXTILE WITH TUGHRA, TURKEY, 19TH CENTURY - AN OTTOMAN METAL THREAD EMBROIDERY TEXTILE WITH TUGHRA, TURKEY, 19TH CENTURY This framed textile fragment from the Ottoman Empire features an imperial calligraphic monogram, or tughra, executed in raised metallic gold-toned embroidery. The monogram is worked onto an irregularly shaped piece of red silk or satin, which is mounted upon a larger, rectangular ground of dark red fabric. The embroidery utilizes high-relief metallic threads to create the complex calligraphic forms characteristic of 19th-century Ottoman textile production. The piece is housed in a simple white frame with a hardboard backing and cord hanging hardware. 35 x 28cm
