A BRONZE INCENSE BURNER IN THE FORM OF A PEACOCK, INDIA DECCAN, 16TH CENTURY - Constructed with a hinged upper body that opens to reveal a central receptacle for burning incense or holding oil. The peacock tail is rendered as a wide fan of seven radiating spokes, each terminating in a small cylindrical socket suitable for holding thin tapers or incense sticks. The bird is decorated with chased and engraved patterns representing plumage and features a prominent crest. A small ring is held in the beak with a suspended floral-shaped pendant. The peacock stands upon a foliate, lotus-style platform supported by a turned pedestal on a broad, circular foot. A long, curved stabilizer handle extends from the rear of the bird, joined to the main body with a hinge mechanism featuring a animal head, likely a makara. The handle terminates in a small, heart-shaped foot.  H: 30cm
