A LARGE MAMLUK BRASS CANDLESTICK SHAMADAN, EGYPT, 16TH CENTURY - The decorative program features two prominent horizontal bands of monumental Thuluth calligraphy set against a background of fine foliate scrolls. Circular medallions are interspersed between the calligraphic panels; one medallion contains a central multi-pointed star or wheel motif, while others feature floral arabesques. The flared base rim is decorated with a repeating band of foliate patterns. The cylindrical neck (added later made of wood) rises from a flat shoulder and includes horizontal moldings.
