AN ANCIENT ROMAN CARNELIAN INTAGLIO IN GOLD RING, CIRCA 100 - 200 A.D. - The centre is set with an oval carnelian intaglio of a deep brownish-red hue. The intaglio is finely carved with the standing figure of the goddess Athena (Minerva) in profile, depicted wearing a crested helmet and a classical chiton. In her right hand, she holds a vertical spear, while her extended left hand supports a small winged figure of Nike (Victory).
