Bidspirit auction | 6 envelopes and a postcard,

6 envelopes and a postcard, most of them registered mail, censorship stamps and stickers, a significant stamp value - and a fascinating story about wealth, trade and the Jewish destiny: from Jewish merchants, Cohen and Levi, Turkey, World War I, to the Czech Republic, to the multi-millionaire industrialist and merchant, of Jewish origin, The Czech patriot, who was one of the first prisoners[!] on the first day of the war[!], was persecuted and exterminated by the Nazis, Heinrich Valdes - background Heinrich Valdes was a leading millionaire industrialist, a Czech patriot of Jewish origin and an art collector. It all started as small as possible. Heinrich was a clerk in the office of the Lokesh and Son company [one of the envelopes bears this name, and it was erased in pencil and under it was written Heinrich Valdes!] which made buttons and cufflinks. Since Valdes had a good command of languages, he became Lokesch's business agent and traveled around the world on behalf of the firm. In 1902 together with engineer Hynek Puc (1856–1938) Waldes left Lokesch and founded his own company Waldes a spol. A year later, Puc invented a special machine that inserted a small spring into hidden dress fasteners, the main product of the new company. The new machine completed the work of ten skilled workers. With the increased production Puc continued to invent additional machines to support the production of pins, safety pins, needles and buttons. The company's center was in Prague [the envelopes in front of us were sent there!] Soon the company grew into a large concern with branch factories in Warsaw, Dresden, Vienna, Paris, Barcelona and New York. But since he was of Jewish descent, the Nazis considered him a condemned man. On September 1, 1939, the first day of World War [one of the first prisoners[!] of the war. ] Waldes was imprisoned by the Gestapo after the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Third Reich and held in Dachau and Buchenwald concentration camps. In 1941 his family, who had been sent to the US by Waldes before the war (he decided to stay in Prague as a Czech patriot) paid the Nazi authorities 8 million Czech crowns (about 1 million reichsmarks or US$250,000). In Buchenwald he suffered a diabetic attack, and was in the prison hospital from April 11, 1940 until his release on June 2, 1941. The Gestapo then flew Waldes to Lisbon, Portugal, where he boarded a ship to the United States. However, Waldes did not survive the journey to the US and died under suspicious circumstances [apparently at the hands of the Germans in a mysterious way] on the ship that stopped in Havana Cuba in May 1941. Valdes was also an avid art collector of contemporary Czech art. In 1918 in Prague he founded the Wolds Museum for his button collection which had over 70 thousand items!!! The collection was transferred after World War II to the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague. In the envelopes in front of us from the First World War, the stamps of the Turkish Empire, censorship stamps, censorship stickers for closing the envelopes and registered mail stamps. One of the envelopes with an Austrian censorship stamp is interesting in addition to the Turkish censorship. The envelopes bear the logo of each of the Jewish merchants: Cohen, Levi, Hefetz, etc. One envelope bears the logo and the great painting of Valdes' business house.
