The man of the heart alludes to his name since Herzl in German means heart. רקע רבי שלמה הכהן נודע כעילוי מגיל צעיר. מסופר כי בגיל 16 חלה מאוד והרופאים אמרו שעליו להפסיק ללמוד תורה כי הלימוד פוגע בלבו החלש. אך הנער סירב להפסיק מלימודו באמרו שהתורה היא חייו. בשנת תרכ”ה התמנה לרב ומו”צ ראשי בווילנה, יחד עם אחיו הגאון הגדול רבי בצלאל. רבי בצלאל ורבי שלמה החזיקו יחדיו בכתר התורה של ירושלים דליטא כל ימי חייהם. רבי שלמה הכהן היה רעו של החפץ חיים ואף היה מהרבנים שה”חפץ חיים” ביקש מהם הסכמה למשנה ברורה. חיבר 37 ספרים והשיב כ 1,500 תשובות בהלכה. על יחס גדולי ישראל אל הרצל ראה בספר בעת ביקורו של הרצל בווילנה (1903), קיבל רבי שלמה את פניו של הרצל בברכת כהנים, כשספר תורה בידו. מתוך תיאור מהתקופה ההיא: יהודי העיר גדשו את הרחובות בצפיפות רבה, וקיבלוהו בחום רב. ראשי הקהילה הגישו לו מגילת קלף שנוסחה על ידי ר' זאב יעבץ, הפותחת בברכה: ”ה' עמך גיבור החיל, ליבבתנו אדוננו, ליבבתנו איש הלבב! מגיל ומרעד נפעמנו, בהיגלותך לעינינו, אחינו!...” והיא מסיימת ”זאת הברכה אשר תברכך עדת עמך בווילנא, כי בידך יתן ה' את תשועת ישראל מציון”, והגאון רבי שלמה הכהן, זקן רבני וילנא, ברך את הרצל בברכת כוהנים. איש הלבב רומז לשמו שכן הרצל בגרמנית פירושו לב. הספר שלפנינו: עצי ברושים - כולל שו”ת וגם חידושים וביאורים על טור יו”ד שבשו”ע, דפוס ראם וילנא תרס”ג עם הקדשה בכת”ק של המחבר זיע”א מצב טוב. מעטפת אדומה
