A magnificent Victorian family Bible featuring the commentary and marginal references of the Reverend Matthew Henry (1662–1714), one of the foremost Protestant biblical commentators. Vol. I of a three-volume set, containing the Old Testament from Genesis through Isaiah. With an elaborately engraved decorative title page and steel-engraved plates throughout, including a striking frontispiece depicting ”Joseph Sold by His Brethren” (Gen. 37:28), engraved by J. Rogers. The copy includes a completed Family Register in manuscript, recording the births and deaths of the Walter family of London — residing in Pimlico, St. John's Wood, Kilburn, and Knightsbridge — between 1838 and 1884, including several entries of infant and child mortality. The register provides unique genealogical and social-historical documentation of Victorian middle-class family life.
