The principal work of Lagarde's scholarly life — a critical edition of the Septuagint text from Genesis to Esther in the Lucianic Syrian recension, designed as the first step in a systematic reconstruction of the original Septuagint text by methodical regression from the fourth-century recensions. Lagarde (1827–1891) was widely recognized as the most renowned Septuagint scholar of the nineteenth century; the New York Times described him shortly after his death as ”the most remarkable writer on Semitic studies that the world has ever known.” His foundational work directly inspired the establishment of the Göttingen Septuagint Project, which continues to the present day. With manuscript ownership inscription on the title page: Dr. H. Bennett, 1898, Romanson — apparently an academic owner who acquired the volume fifteen years after publication.
