Set of Four Hanging Scrolls: Calligraphy,by Yuan Xikang - Yuan Xikang (b. 1965) is an influential contemporary Chinese artist and sculptor, born in Lanzhou, Gansu Province. A graduate of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in sculpture, he is renowned for integrating traditional Chinese aesthetics with Western modern art forms, particularly through large-scale public sculptures and installations. Yuan specializes in using materials such as metal and stone to explore the interaction between nature and human civilization, developing a unique visual language that blends abstraction and expressive imagery. His long-standing focus on ecological issues and cultural heritage is reflected in his modern reinterpretation of traditional symbols, earning him recognition as a ”mediator between Eastern philosophy and contemporary visual expression.” Notable works include Traces of Wind at the Beijing Olympic Park, Mountains and Rivers Dancing at the Shanghai World Expo Park, and the installation series Whispers of Ecology. Yuan has participated in international exhibitions including the Venice Biennale (Chinese Pavilion, 2019) and the Guangzhou Triennial (2018), with works collected by institutions such as the National Art Museum of China and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. He received the ”Outstanding Contribution to Chinese Public Art” award in 2016 and was commissioned by the UN Environment Programme in 2020 to create the ecological installation Earth Concerto, leveraging art to promote global environmental awareness. His theoretical work Sculpture and Site (2017) is widely used as a textbook in art academies.
