A Set of Six Calligraphic Scrolls, by Guan Mianjun - Guan Mianjun (1871-1933), courtesy name Yaoqin and art name Boheng, was a prominent political figure and railway pioneer in late Qing and early Republican China. He was also a significant art collector and calligrapher. Although better known for his political and railway contributions, Guan Mianjun also had a notable presence in the arts. He was an avid connoisseur and collector of paintings and calligraphy, amassing an impressive collection of precious works dating from the Song and Yuan dynasties onward. Most notably, his collection included the only surviving autograph work by the renowned Tang dynasty poet Du Mu—Poem for Zhang Haohao—on which he affixed his collector's seals, playing a role in the preservation of this national treasure. Furthermore, Guan was a highly skilled calligrapher, a talent honed through his classical education and success in the imperial examinations. His calligraphy style was upright, refined, and powerful. His artistic legacy is visibly embedded in public infrastructure—he inscribed the station names for several stops along the Beijing-Baotou railway line, such as Qinglongqiao Station and Baoziwan Station, merging practical function with artistic expression.
