Calligraphy,by Pan Linggao - Pan Linggao (1867–1954), courtesy name Xijiu, was from Anxin, Hebei. He passed the imperial examination in the 20th year of the Guangxu reign and was awarded the title of Jinshi. He was appointed as an editor at the Hanlin Academy. After the Xinhai Revolution, he served as the governor of Gansu Province. In 1922, disillusioned by corruption in the government, he resigned and returned to his hometown, later moving to Tianjin and Beijing, where he enjoyed writing poetry and calligraphy. Pan Linggao was highly skilled in calligraphy, particularly in regular script and running script, and was known for his mastery of small-sized characters. His style was elegant and refined, with a balance of softness and strength, simplicity yet profound depth. He developed his own unique style, and during his time, he was often compared to Tan Yankai, with the phrase ”Southern Tan, Northern Pan” being used to describe their calligraphy. His calligraphy was known as the ”Pan style.”
