Calligraphy,by Lin Sanzhi - Lin Sanzhi (1898–1989), originally named Lin Yilin, with the courtesy name Sanzhi and art names such as Sanchi and Zuo Er (Left Ear), was a native of Jiangpu, Jiangsu (now part of Nanjing), though his ancestral roots were in He County, Anhui. He was an outstanding calligrapher of the 20th century, renowned particularly for his cursive script (caoshu), which earned him the title ”Sage of Cursive Script.” His early calligraphy was influenced by Huang Tingjian and Wang Duo, and he later immersed himself in the classical traditions of Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, and other Jin and Tang masters. In his later years, he synthesized these influences into a distinctive personal style: his brushwork was vigorous and seasoned, his lines alternating between dry and moist, with rich variations in ink tonality. The structure of his characters was uniquely fluid and dynamic, conveying a vivid, natural energy that elevated the lyrical and artistic expression of calligraphy to new heights. Beyond calligraphy, Lin was also accomplished in painting and poetry, earning the reputation of ”Master of the Three Perfections” (poetry, calligraphy, and painting). His painting style, influenced by Huang Binhong, emphasized expressive brushwork and artistic conception, while his poetry was simple yet profound, often reflecting his insights on life and art. His published works include *Collected Poems of Lin Sanzhi* (*San Zhi Shi Cao*) and *Collected Calligraphy of Lin Sanzhi* (*Lin Sanzhi Shufa Ji*). His calligraphic artistry has had a profound impact on contemporary calligraphy, and he is widely regarded as the ”Foremost Master of Cursive Script in Modern Times.”
