Landscape in Blue and Green ,by Wu Hufan (Qing Dynasty) - Wu Hufan (1894–1968), originally named Wu Xun, with the courtesy name Dongzhuang and art name Hufan, was a native of Suzhou, Jiangsu. He was a renowned modern Chinese painter, calligrapher, and connoisseur, as well as a key representative of the ”Shanghai School” of art. Specializing in landscape painting, Wu was deeply influenced by Dong Yuan, Juran, and the ”Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty,” while also incorporating elements of the Song Imperial Academy style. His works are known for their lush elegance, refined coloring, and a harmonious blend of classical charm and innovative expression. He was hailed as a ”leading master of modern painting.” Wu was also accomplished in calligraphy, particularly in running and regular scripts, characterized by rounded and graceful strokes. With profound expertise in the authentication of ancient paintings and calligraphy, Wu Hufan amassed an extensive collection of art, including treasured pieces such as ”Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains” (Remaining Mountain Scroll). He mentored many talented artists, including Xu Bangda, and played a significant role in the preservation and development of modern Chinese painting and calligraphy. His representative works include ”Clouds Over Mountains” and ”Pine Wind and Vine Moon.”
