One Page of a Letter,by Liang Shuming - Liang Shuming (1893-1988), born in Guilin, Guangxi with original name Huanding and courtesy name Shouming, was a renowned modern Chinese thinker, philosopher and educator, among the early representatives of Modern New Confucianism. Devoting his life to reconstructing Confucian thought for modernity and exploring cultural paths for China, he proposed the ”Rural Reconstruction Theory” advocating cultural revival and educational reform to address social issues. His philosophical system integrated Chinese and Western thought, with his masterpiece Eastern and Western Cultures and Their Philosophies providing the first systematic comparison of cultural differences while emphasizing Confucianism's modern relevance. After 1949, he maintained intellectual independence despite political criticism, producing later works like The Human Mind and Life and Essentials of Chinese Culture. Hailed as ”the last great Confucian”, he chaired the Council of Chinese Culture Academy and profoundly influenced contemporary New Confucian development.
