Pair of Hanging Scrolls: Calligraphic Couplets in Regular Script - Hongyi (1880-1942), Republic Period - Hong Yi (1880–1942), secular name Li Shutong, was a native of Pinghu, Zhejiang, and a renowned modern artist, educator, and Buddhist scholar. In his early years, he pioneered new trends in art, music, and drama, introducing Western art education to China. He composed timeless pieces such as *Farewell* and founded the Spring Willow Society, which marked the beginning of modern Chinese theater. In 1918, he ordained as a Buddhist monk, taking the dharma name Yan Yin. He devoted himself to the study of the Nanshan Vinaya school and became its eleventh patriarch. His calligraphy developed a unique style—after his ordination, it embodied a meditative, ethereal quality. Throughout his life, he seamlessly integrated art and Buddhism, leaving a profound and lasting legacy.
