Boundless Spring View, by Pan Tianshou - Pan Tianshou (1897–1971), originally named Tian Shou, with the courtesy name Dayi and art name Shouzhe, was a native of Ninghai, Zhejiang. He was an outstanding modern Chinese ink painter and art educator, recognized as one of the “Four Great Masters of 20th-Century Chinese Painting”, alongside Wu Changshuo, Qi Baishi, and Huang Binhong. Pan excelled in bird-and-flower and landscape paintings, and was also skilled in figure painting. He was particularly known for his depictions of eagles, mynas, pines, and rocks. Early in his career, he studied the styles of Ming and Qing masters such as Xu Wei and Bada Shanren, later developing a highly personal approach informed by his deep observation of nature. His compositions are strikingly bold and often unconventional, skillfully using contrast between solid and void to create dynamic tension. His brushwork is vigorous and powerful, complemented by ink washes that are both intense and subtly moist. His overall style is monumental and imposing, reflecting his artistic principle of “strengthening the bone” (强其骨), which emphasizes structural force and resilient spirit. Throughout his life, Pan was deeply committed to art education. He taught at institutions such as the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now China Academy of Art) and advocated that “Chinese and Western painting should maintain their distance.” He emphasized preserving the essence of traditional Chinese painting while nurturing new generations of artists. His contributions were instrumental in shaping modern Chinese ink art and establishing its educational framework.
