Splashed-Ink Landscape,by Zhang Daqian - Zhang Daqian (May 10, 1899 – April 2, 1983) was a renowned Chinese painter from Neijiang, Sichuan Province. His original name was Zhengquan, which he later changed to Yuan. He also adopted the art name Daqian and had various other titles, such as Daqian Jushi (Great Recluse) and Xiali Gang Ren (Man from Lower Li Port), and his studio was named Dafeng Tang. Zhang Daqian's life was filled with legendary episodes. He embarked on his artistic journey early, moving to Japan in 1917 to study dyeing and weaving, but returned to China in 1919. Upon his return, he became a disciple of Zeng Xi and Li Ruiqing, two prominent scholars and artists of the time. Zhang is best known for his exceptional skills in Chinese ink painting, particularly landscapes and flowers, and his versatility in adapting traditional techniques. He is widely regarded as one of the most significant Chinese painters of the 20th century, with a style that evolved over his lifetime. He blended both traditional Chinese painting techniques and elements of Western art. His later works were heavily influenced by Ming and Qing Dynasty styles, and he is especially known for his mastery of splashed-ink painting (泼墨画). Zhang Daqian is also renowned for his calligraphy and his significant role in the revival of the Ming-Qing painting tradition in the 20th century. His contributions to Chinese modern art and his ability to bridge the past with the present solidified his reputation as a major figure in both China and the international art community.
