Pine and Eagle,by Yang Shanshen - Yang Shanshen (1913 - 2004), styled Liuzhai, was born in Taishan, Guangdong. He was one of the outstanding contemporary Chinese painters and a prominent representative of the Lingnan School of Painting. Along with Guan Shanyue, Li Xiongcai, and Zhao Shaoang, he is regarded as one of the ”Four Masters of the Lingnan School” or the ”Second Generation of the Four Lingnan Masters.” Yang Shanshen had a well-rounded artistic education and excelled in landscapes, flowers and birds, and figure painting. He adopted both Chinese and Western influences in his creations, emphasizing life sketching and adhering to the Lingnan painting school's spirit of ”combining Chinese and Western elements, integrating ancient and modern techniques.” His style blended traditional brushwork with Western artistic techniques, based on life sketching and following nature. Yang created a unique personal style, with a wide range of subjects, varied forms, innovative compositions, and a combination of refined and bold brushwork. His animal paintings covered diverse subjects, while his figure paintings effectively utilized traditional techniques, particularly the ”Eighteen Methods of Brushwork.” His landscape works displayed both large and small freehand styles.
