Orchid,by Pan Tianshou - Pan Tianshou (March 14, 1897 – September 5, 1971), courtesy name Dayi, also known by his self-pseudonym Ah Shou, was born in Ninghai, Zhejiang. He was a renowned modern Chinese painter and art educator. In his early years, he was named Tianshou and studied under renowned masters such as Jing Hengyi and Li Shutong. He served as a professor and president at the National Art College, a professor and president at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, and the chairman of the Zhejiang Artists Association. He was also the vice-chairman of the China Artists Association and a member of the Chinese Federation of Literary and Art Circles. In 1958, he was appointed as an honorary academician of the Russian Academy of Arts. Pan was skilled in expressive flower-and-bird painting and landscape painting, occasionally painting figures. He also excelled in calligraphy, poetry, and seal cutting. His expressive flower-and-bird style was initially influenced by Wu Changshuo and later by Shi Tao and the ”Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou.” His painting style is bold, majestic, and ancient, with powerful composition that captivates the viewer and a strong sense of modernity. He, along with Wu Changshuo, Qi Baishi, and Huang Binhong, is regarded as one of the ”Four Great Masters of Chinese Painting” in the 20th century.
