Four-Line Calligraphic Handscroll in Running Script,by Yang Shoujing - Yang Shoujing (1839–1915), with the courtesy name Xingwu and the art name Linsu Laoren (Old Man Nearing Su[zhou]), was a native of Yidu, Hubei Province. A renowned scholar and artist of the late Qing and early Republican periods, he excelled in calligraphy, mastering various scripts with particular distinction in running and regular scripts. He advocated for equal reverence toward both stele inscriptions and modelbook calligraphy, as exemplified in his influential work *Essentials of Calligraphy* (《書舉要》). As a cultural envoy to Japan, he brought a vast collection of碑拓 (rubbings of stele inscriptions) and significantly promoted the art of Chinese calligraphy, contributing profoundly to the transformation of Japanese calligraphy (書道). His legacy remains enduring in East Asian calligraphic traditions.
