Classical Calligraphy by Dong Qichang - Dong Qichang (1555–1636), courtesy name Xuanzai, with art names such as Si Bai and Xiangguang Jushi, was a native of Huating (present-day Songjiang, Shanghai). A master calligrapher and painter of the Ming Dynasty, he excelled in regular, running, and cursive scripts, drawing inspiration from Wang Xizhi and Yan Zhenqing. His style was elegantly refined and subtly vibrant, forming a distinctive manner often praised as ”Yan's bone structure and Zhao's grace” (顏骨趙姿). In painting, he proposed the ”Theory of Northern and Southern Schools,” categorizing landscape painting into two traditions and championing the Southern School of literati painting. His landscapes were influenced by Dong Yuan and Ju Ran, characterized by sparse, understated brushwork and an ethereal, tranquil atmosphere. His ideas profoundly shaped late Ming and Qing Dynasty painting. Dong was also a noted theorist, with works such as *Essays from the Painting-Meditation Studio* (《畫禪室隨筆》) reflecting his deep engagement with both practice and theory. As a leading figure in the Ming art world, his contributions to calligraphy, painting, and artistic discourse remain influential.
