Calligraphy Hanging Scroll,by Prince Suqing - Prince Su (Shanqi) (1866–1922), of the Aisin-Gioro clan, courtesy name Aitang and art name Ousuiting Zhu, was a prominent imperial clansman and high official of the late Qing Dynasty, having inherited the title of Prince Su. Shanqi played a significant role in the political reforms of the late Qing, serving as Minister of Civil Affairs and Minister of Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs. He actively promoted the modernization of the police system, urban administration, and judiciary. After the fall of the Qing, he refused to accept the new republic and devoted himself to the royalist restoration efforts as part of the Imperial Restoration Society (宗社党). Although his artistic achievements are less renowned than his political career, he was an avid practitioner of calligraphy and painting, with particular skill in calligraphy. His style was rooted in the model-book tradition (帖学 tiexue) and reflected the influence of the refined Qing court style (馆阁体 guangeti). His writing is upright, elegant, and precisely executed, with a scholarly grace characteristic of literate nobility. As a Qing imperial kinsman, his calligraphic works exemplify the cultural refinement and aesthetic tastes of the late Qing aristocracy.
