Delightful Journey at Spring Mountains,by Wang Shimin - Wang Shimin (1592–1680), courtesy name Xunzhi, art names Yanke and Xilu Laoren, was a native of Taicang, Jiangsu. A renowned painter of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, he was the foremost of the “Four Wangs” (Wang Shimin, Wang Jian, Wang Hui, and Wang Yuanqi) and is often mentioned alongside Wu Wei and Dong Qichang as a leading representative of orthodox painting in the early Qing period. Specializing in landscape painting, Wang Shimin received early guidance from Dong Qichang and modeled his work after the Yuan master Huang Gongwang. He later incorporated elements from Ni Zan, Wu Zhen, and other great painters, developing a distinct personal style. His brushwork was vigorous and robust, with ink washes that were deep yet lucid. He often employed hemp-fiber texture strokes (披麻皴, pima cun) to depict mountains and rocks, while his trees were rendered with rich layers and subtle variation. His compositions are balanced and serene, exuding a classical elegance. Though many of his works paid homage to past masters, they also revealed his own artistic sensibility, infused with a profound literati spirit. Born into an official family, Wang later withdrew from public life to devote himself to painting. Not only was he a highly accomplished artist, but he also mentored younger painters such as Wang Yuanqi, exerting a lasting influence on the development of Qing dynasty landscape painting. Works like Cloudy Valleys and Misty Beaches and Range upon Range of Mountains have been passed down through generations and remain important references for the study of early Qing painting.
