Peaks Above the Clouds, by Wang Jingming - Wang Jingming (1688–1721), courtesy name Dansi and art name Weixian, was a calligrapher and painter from Jiading, Jiangsu (now part of Shanghai) during the Qing Dynasty. He achieved the highest honor in the imperial examination (zhuangyuan) in 1721 and was appointed a compiler in the Hanlin Academy, earning deep appreciation from the Kangxi Emperor for his literary and artistic talent. A disciple of Wang Yuanqi, one of the “Four Wangs” of the orthodox school, Wang Jingming inherited the tradition of the Loudong painting style. His landscape works are known for their refined elegance, subtle ink tones, and scholarly charm. Characterized by meticulous composition, delicate brushwork, and clear coloring, he excelled particularly in album leaves and handscrolls, embodying the aesthetic ideals of literati painting. Although he died young with limited works surviving, he remains an important representative of the orthodox landscape painting tradition in the early Qing Dynasty.
