Qing Dynasty,Reclusion in the Deep Mountains, by Fang Cong - Fang Cong (dates of birth and death unknown), courtesy names Huangshan and Youhuang, with the art name Shidian, was a native of Zhejiang. He excelled in landscape painting, drawing inspiration from the ancient master Huang Gongwang and studying under Zhang Zongcang, becoming a third-generation inheritor of Wang Yuanqi's artistic style. His brushwork balanced strength and softness, depicting majestic mountains and lush forests. By combining dry-ink texture strokes with wet-ink washes, he created deeply atmospheric compositions. His use of color was subtle and fresh, embodying a unique sense of classical elegance. Fang Cong served long-term in the imperial court and was an important court painter during the Qianlong era. Many of his works were created by imperial order, often in collaboration with artists such as Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining). His pieces were extensively documented in the imperial catalogues ”Shiqu Baoji: Continuation” and ”Third Compilation,” with forty-eight works officially recorded. Fang Cong made significant contributions to the development and flourishing of Qing Dynasty court painting.
