Two red plain stationery papers inscribed with: ‘Lin Zexu’ and ‘Wang Guowei’ - Lin Zexu (1785-1850), whose courtesy name was Shaomu, was born in Houguan, Fujian. He became an imperial scholar during the Jiaqing era and was a prominent figure in the anti-smuggling movement of the late Qing Dynasty. Known for his skillful calligraphy, particularly in small seal script and flowing cursive style, his works harmoniously blend the robust spirit of political calligraphy with the refined elegance of literary calligraphy. This not only reflects his integration of practical thought with artistic cultivation, but also fully showcases the dual lineage characteristic of Lin's calligraphy, which traces back to both Ouyang Xiu and Wang Anshi. Wang Guowei (1877-1927), originally named Guozhen, with the courtesy names Jing'an (An), Boyu, and the pen names Tingliang, Jianren, Yongguan, Donghaizhi Gong, Guan Tang, among others. He was posthumously honored with the title of Zhongqu. Born in Haining Prefecture, Zhejiang Province (present-day Haining City, Jiaxing Prefecture, Zhejiang Province), Wang Guowei was a renowned scholar with international acclaim during the transitional period between China's near and modern eras.
