Carved Red Lacquer Incense Box,Ming Dynasty - The circular box with fitted cover and low ring foot. The top finely carved in red lacquer with a luxuriant peony bloom on a leafy stem, the petals plump and leaves lush, executed with rounded, confident knife-work and well-modulated relief, characteristic of the Yongle-Xuande style. The vermilion lacquer is thick, vibrant, and lustrous from centuries of handling; the interior and base coated in black lacquer, the exposed body showing a chestnut-brown tone. Accompanied by its original Japanese paulownia-wood box, the cover inscribed in ink “Tsuishu Kōgō” (Carved Red Lacquer Incense Box), exuding an attractive old patina. Excellent lacquer quality, masterful carving, and rich colour, combined with clear provenance; a rare and fine example of a small Ming carved red lacquer box.
