Ming Dynasty Carved Cinnabar Lacquer 'Lion and Ball' Two-Tier Box - MYTHICAL VIGOR: A MING DYNASTY CINNABAR LACQUER TREASURE This two-tiered rectangular box is a robust example of Ming Dynasty cinnabar lacquerwork (tihong). The vessel is masterfully carved through thick layers of vermilion lacquer to reveal a dynamic central scene on the cover: a ”Lion Dancing with a Brocade Ball.” The lion is depicted with a powerful, muscular body and a spirited expression, playfully engaging with a beribboned ball—a classic Chinese motif symbolizing joy, protection, and the fulfillment of desires. The vertical sides of both tiers are densely carved with sophisticated floral patterns against a geometric diaper ground. The carving style is characteristic of the Ming period, featuring deep, bold incisions and rounded edges that provide a rich tactile experience.
