Ming Dynasty Carved Cinnabar Lacquer Inkstone Box with Figure Scene - The rectangular inkstone box is carved in rich cinnabar lacquer of a deep, warm tone. The cover is finely worked in high relief with a narrative scene set within a garden courtyard. One scholar stands at a balustrade, looking downward, attended by a single servant, while below him another scholar is shown standing on the ground accompanied by two young pages. The two figures are positioned facing one another across the architectural setting, creating a balanced and engaging visual dialogue. The scene is further enriched with rockwork, ancient pine trees, and drifting clouds, lending depth and structure to the composition. The figures are rendered with subtle gestures and flowing robes, demonstrating confident carving and refined workmanship characteristic of mature Ming dynasty lacquer carving. The sides are bordered with scrolling floral motifs. The interior is lacquered black and fitted with an oval inkstone recess and a compartment for an ink stick, combining elegant design with practical function. Well preserved overall, the box represents a fine example of Ming dynasty scholar’s lacquerware.
