Wen Peng Bamboo Carved Irregular Seal - Carved from a natural bamboo root, this seal is a premier record of the scholarly aesthetic of the Ming Dynasty. The carver masterfully utilized the organic form and texture of the bamboo, preserving its rugged, gnarled appearance while incorporating subtle decorative elements reminiscent of aged plum or pine branches. The side of the seal bears a calligraphic inscription in running script signed ”Wen Peng.” Wen Peng (1498-1573), eldest son of the grandmaster Wen Zhengming, was the pivotal leader of the Suzhou (Wu) School of seal carving. His brush-like knife work and elegant character structure are vividly displayed here, reflecting his status as one of the most influential seal artists in Chinese history. The provenance of this artifact is exceptionally well-documented. It was formerly in the prestigious collection of Xu Xungong (Xu Xun), the manager of the Hongkou Branch of the Hua Hsing Commercial Bank and a member of the Central Political Committee. The accompanying documentation, including Xu’s business card and historical records of the Hua Hsing Commercial Bank, provides a clear lineage of its ownership within Shanghai's banking elite in the early 20th century. Standing at 9.4 cm, this seal remains a rare intersection of master craftsmanship and significant modern history.
