Bidspirit auction | 2nd–3rd Century, Gandhara: Stone-Carved Seated

2nd–3rd Century, Gandhara: Stone-Carved Seated Pensive Avalokiteshvara (Guanyin) - Carved from bluish-grey stone of dense, refined texture, the surface bears a mellow patina accumulated over millennia. The Bodhisattva sits in the pensive half-lotus posture atop a rectangular pedestal, right hand gently touching the cheek—eyes half-lidded, countenance serene and introspective, conveying profound contemplation. A nimbus rises behind the head with crisp, layered rims; the simple diadem, necklace and armbands are carved with restraint yet distinction. Robes drape naturally over the form, flowing folds rendered with fluid, vigorous lines that cling subtly to the body, capturing Gandhara’s hallmark blend of solemnity and realism. Perfectly proportioned, spirit and form in perfect harmony—an exceptional early Buddhist sculpture, naturally aged and rich in ancient aura.
