Bidspirit auction | A Bronze Figure of Seated

A Bronze Figure of Seated Buddha, Gandhara, 7th–9th Century - Cast from refined bronze, the entire piece bears a thick layer of deep bluish-green patina—simple, solemn, and dignified—with a warm, lustrous surface glow. The Buddha sits in full lotus posture, right hand raised in the gesture of fearlessness (Abhaya Mudra), left hand resting upon the knee, bearing an air of utmost grace and authority. The face is full and rounded, eyes gently downcast, expression serene and benevolent, with faint traces of ancient pigment remaining. Clad in a shawl draped over both shoulders, the garment folds cling closely to the body, rendered in dense, flowing lines that convey a robust, well-proportioned physique. Behind the head rises an openwork aureole with delicately chased ornament; attendant figures stand vividly on either side. The robust, waisted lotus throne provides firm support, with a pair of lions facing each other in lively pose at its base. Exquisitely cast and perfectly proportioned, this work unites the rounded naturalism and solemn tranquility characteristic of later Gandhara sculpture—an exceptionally rare piece of distinct period style.
