12th–13th Century, Pala Dynasty: Statue of the Sun God Surya - Crafted from refined copper, the piece carries a mellow, lustrous surface graced by a rich deep-brown patina with faint verdigris flecks—redolent of profound antiquity. The Bodhisattva sits in relaxed half-lotus ease, one foot resting upon a lotus pedestal, one hand forming a mudra while the other holds a sacred gem, bearing an air of poised grace. The face is rounded and serene, features composed, with an urna clearly marked at the brow; the jeweled crown is exquisitely fashioned, and necklaces and armbands layered yet uncluttered. Behind rises an openwork mandorla of fluid scrolling foliage, its apex and edges flame-shaped. The sturdy plinth-supported lotus throne is adorned with mythical beasts along the front rim, carved in soft, lively lines. Harmoniously proportioned and robust in form, masterfully wrought, this statue embodies the gentle, rounded grace characteristic of Southern Seas art—an exceptional treasure of Southeast Asian Buddhist sculpture.
