12th Century, Goryeo Dynasty: Celadon Tea Bowl Stand with Inlaid Chrysanthemum Design - A masterpiece of 12th-century Goryeo celadon at its zenith: a perfectly matched cup and stand, harmonious in every proportion. The cup has gently curved walls and a neat foot; the broad, shallow stand rises to a raised central receptacle, with steady, balanced contours—simple, elegant, and timelessly refined. Glazed throughout in the legendary Goryeo kingfisher-green: luminous, translucent, and velvety like congealed jade, with fine, silken crackle enriching the surface. Decorated in Goryeo’s celebrated inlay technique (sanggam): designs were incised into the clay body, then filled with white and black slip before glazing. The chrysanthemum blossoms and scrolling vines emerge beneath the glaze in soft, contrasting tones—quiet, precise, and exquisitely restrained. The pattern complements the glaze rather than competing with it, the hallmark of Goryeo’s highest artistic ideal. In form, glaze, and masterful inlay, this set embodies the very soul of 12th-century Goryeo celadon: serene, cultured, and technically superb—one of the most refined achievements in the history of Korean ceramics.
