12th Century: Goryeo Celadon Mallow-rim Plate with Impressed Peony Pattern - A fine 12th-century Goryeo celadon dish, gracefully shaped with a six-lobed foliate rim, gently curving wall, and neatly formed foot—balanced, elegant, and perfectly proportioned in every line. Covered entirely in a warm, honey-toned celadon glaze, softly lustrous and smooth as polished jade, traversed throughout by fine, silken crackle that lends depth and quiet antiquity. The centre is decorated with moulded peony blossoms and scrolling foliage: full, rich petals and flowing vines rendered with remarkable clarity, rising gently beneath the translucent glaze to appear soft, elusive, and exquisitely refined—decoration that complements rather than overwhelms the beauty of the glaze itself. In form, colour, and the restrained elegance of its moulded ornament, this is a quintessential Goryeo work: harmonious, cultured, and masterfully crafted, standing alongside the finest contemporary Song ceramics yet possessing its own distinct, serene grace.
